This volume contains data on two families, 16 genera and 445 species of the families Rhinonyssidae (parasites in the respiratory system of birds) and 12 genera and 110 species of Spinturnicidae (ectoparasites of bats).
According to Lindquist, Krantz & Walter (2009), Order Mesostigmata is composed of three suborders: Sejida, Trigynaspida and Monogynaspida with 26 superfamilies and about 12000 described species.
According to Beaulieu et al. (2011), the suborder consists of the infraorders Uropodina Kramer, 1881 and Gamasina Kramer, 1881, as well as of 15 superfamilies and 78 families. In Lindquist, Krantz & Walter (2009) the superfamilies are 18.
Cohort Gamasina of Lindquist, Krantz & Walter (2009) includes 10 superfamilies. Here belong most of the Mesostigmata, both predators and parasites.
Within Gamasina are delimitated 11 superfamilies and 42 families. Superfamily Dermanyssoidea remains within the Hyporder Dermanyssiae Evans et Till, 1979, with 17 families.
Beaulieu et al. 1911. Superorder Parasitiformes Reuter, 1909. In: Zhang Z.-Q. (Ed.) Animal biodiversity. An outline of higher-level classification and survey of taxonomic richness. – Zootaxa, 3148: 123–128.
Lindquist, Krantz & Walter 2009. Mesostigmata. In Krantz & Walter (Eds)., Manuel of Acarology, III Edition.
After Krantz & Walter (2009, Eds), 14 families of parasitic mites form this superfamily, after the latest list of Parasitiformes families (Beaulieu et al., 1911) – 17. In this volume are considered the families Rhinonyssidae and Spinturnicidae.
Almost all Rhinonyssidae live in the nare passages of birds. One (Sternostoma tracheacolum Lawrence) has been found in the tracheae and lungs of birds and some Ptilonyssus have been recorded as living on the bird’s body or even in the nests.
N. Bregetova reviewed in 1951 the most numerous and common mites living in the respiratory system of birds – the Rhinonyssidae. By this time she was able to enumerate only 26 species in 10 genera, six of which are still valid: Rhinonyssus Trouessart, Sternostoma Berlese et Trouessart, Ptilonyssus Berl. et Tr., Rhinoecius Cooreman, Larinyssus Strandtmann and Rallinyssus Strandtmann. Four other generic names have been synonymized since (Sternostomum, Neonyssus, Ptilonyssoides and Rhinonyssoides). This scarce information was contributed mainly by Giebel (who described the first rhinonyssid in 1871), Trouessart, Berlese, Trägårdh, Hirst, Vitzthum, Castro, Cooreman, Strandtmann and Bregetova. Trouessart (1895) considered these mites as subfamily Rhinonyssinae and Vitzthum (1935) raised them in a family. However, some authors (Domrow) have longtime maintained the broader concept of Dermanyssidae and considered Rhinonyssinae as one of it’s subfamilies. Bregetova has splited these mites into two families – Rhinonyssidae and Ptilonyssidae, which was not accepted aside from few authors (Dusbábek & Černý, 1970).
Speaking of the “prehistory” of the studies on Rhinonyssidae we must notice the work of Brazilian specialists Castro & Pereira (1947), Castro (1948) and Pereira & Castro (1949) describing the subfamily Ptilonyssinae and several new species.
As for many other families, the “prehistory” of the research ends with the beginning of the long series of publications of Alex Fain (from 1956 to 1974). Based on his large collection, obtained in Africa, and on many mites from zoo birds, Fain (together with Aitken, Bafort, Bastin, Carpenter, Holland, Hyland, Johnson, Lukoschus, Nadchatram, Sixl, Moritsch, Vercammen-Grandjean) contributed greatly to the modern system of Rhinonyssidae, describing many new genera, species and subdividing the family into subfamilies. In the same time active research was carried out in Australia by R. Domrow (from 1964 to 1992). Domrow synonymised many older genera (Mesonyssus Fain, Mesonyssoides Fain et Nadchatram, Psitanyssus Fain, Falconyssus Fain). Some other genera, described by Castro (1948), were made synonyms by Zumpt & Till (1955) in their important contribution to the Rhinonyssidae of Southern Africa (Flavionyssus, Rochanyssus, Paraneonyssus, Travanyssus, Vitznyssus). Also important contributions to the study of Rhinonyssidae were made by Butenko (many publications on Russian and other mites since 1961, including a book in 1984, partly with Stanjukovich and Lavrovskaya), Shumilo & Lunkashu (incl. a book in 1976), Strandtmann and co-authors (Brooks, Clifford, Furman, Wharton), Knee (2008, together with Proctor and Galloway), Pence (1972–1979, together with Casto, Young and Canaris), Bregetova (from 1950 to 1983), Hyland (1961–1970, partly with Clark, Ford and Galloway), Kadosaka, Kaneko & Asanuma (1987), Feider & Mironescu (1972–1982), Dusbábek (since 1969), Amaral (1962–1978), Spicer (since 1977), George (1961), Furman (1957), Wilson (from 1958 to 1980), Sakakibara (1967, 1968), Crossley (1950, 1952), Grétillat (1969, 1970), Sixl (1969–1971), Sartbaev (1979) and others. Many new studies have been made in Spain by Guevara, Úbeda, Rodriguez, Rojas and other acarologists.
Berlese & Trouessart (1889) describe the important genera Ptilonyssus and Sternostoma, containing more than half of all Rhinonyssidae
Trouessart (1894) – becomes the author of another important genus – Rhinonyssus
Trouessart (1895) describes the family Rhinonyssidae
Between 1895 and the Word War II very few authors study species (no new genera) of Rhinonyssidae: Trägårdh (1904), Vitzthum (1935), Hirst (1921–1923)
The post-war period is very rich in research on endoparasitic acari, incl. Rhinonyssidae. The following authors should be noticed (some of them still working on these mites):
J. Cooreman (1946) – describes the new genus Rhinoecius – start of research on the Rhinonyssidae on owls.
In Brazil M. Castro and C. Pereira try to restructure the family Rhinonyssidae, describing the subfamily Ptilonyssinae and several new species.
In the same time in the United States several researchers start working on Rhinonyssidae. Most prominent among them is R.W. Strandtmann (papers on Rhinonyssidae from 1948 to 1962, partly with C. Clifford, D. Furman, W. Wharton and others). The publications of Strandtmann contributed greatly to the knowledge on these mites. He described many new species and the genera Larinyssus and Rallinyssus.
D.A. Crossley – publications in 1950 and 1952 with descriptions of new mites from pigeons.
The great Belgian Acarologist A. Fain (1912–2009) started publishing on nasal mites in 1956, based on his large collection from Rwanda and Congo. He reorganysed the system of Rhinonyssidae, described (partly together with Aitken, Bafort, Bastin, Carpentier, Herin, Pulyert, Holland, Hyland, Johnston, Lukoschus, Mortelmans, Nadchatram, Sixl, and Vercammen-Grandjean) the new subfamily Rhinoeciinae, five valid new genera, 174 valid new species and several subspecies from many countries.
N. Wilson published papers on Rhinonyssidae from Antarctic and Subantarctic birds, birds of the Philippines, New Guinea, Taiwan, Thailand, Alaska and other Pacific areas (1958–1980). Also from this area many species have been described by I. Sakakibara and by E.W. Baker and M. Delfinado. The nasal mites of Japan were studied by T. Kadosaka and other researches.
Russian school in the study of Rhinonyssidae started with the thesis of Belopolskaya (1951) and is based mainly on the many papers of N. Bregetova and O. Butenko (with K.I. Lavrovskaya, M. Stanyukovich and other co-authors). Butenko worked in the reserve of Oka and described many new taxa of Rhinonyssidae. N. Bregetova considered these mites as being two families – Rhinonyssidae and Ptilonyssidae, what was not accepted but by few authors (Dusbábek & Černý, 1970). She published from 1950 to 1983 10 papers containing data on Rhinonyssidae, including a monograph on Gamasida and attempts to clarify the origin of these mites. S.K. Sartbaev published several papers on Rhinonyssidae of Central Asia from 1961 to 1983. On the Rhinonyssidae of Asia published several papers also T.T. Isakova, D.S. Ivanov and others. On Modavian mites worked R.P. Shumilo and M.I. Lunkashu.
In South Africa F. Zumpt and W.M. Till published in 1955 and 1961 important contribution on Rhinonyssidae, with descriptions of nine new species and a list of African Rhinonyssidae
D.P. Furman – in 1957 published comprehensive revision of genus Sternostoma
S. Gretillat – in 1961 described two new species and in 1959, together with A. Capron and E.R. Brygoo, described new nasal mites from Madagascar. The taxa, created by them (Agapornyssinae subfam. nov., Agapornyssus gen. nov. and Agapornyssus faini sp.n.) were synonymes.
H. G. Ford – in 1961 described Ptilonyssus constrictus
Z. Feider and I. Mironescu described from 1962 to 1982 several new species from Romania and Papua New Guinea.
K.E. Hyland – in series of papers (1959–1970)(patly with H.G. Ford, T.D. Clark and A. Moorhouse) described many new taxa from Mexico and USA
F. Dusbábek and V. Černý – studies of Cuban Rhinonyssidae (1969, 1970)
The series of papers (1972–1979) of D.B. Pence contain important data on the nasal mites from Louisiana, but also of other states.
P. Beron (1975) published the only paper on Bulgarian Rhinonyssidae. W. Sixl published papers on Rhinonyssidae from Austria.
V. Amaral took over the Brazilian school of research on nasal mites and from 1962 to 1974 published many new species and comprehensive list of Rhinonyssidae. This studies have been followed by C.S. Mascarenhas, D.S. Silva and other Brasilian researchers.
In Australia R. Domrow wrote from 1964 to 1992 many papers containing data on Rhinonyssidae of Australia and New Zealand. He reformed the system of these mites, put in synonymy many species and several genera (Sternostomoides, Rhinosterna, Sternoecius, Mesonyssus, Mesonyssoides, Psittanyssus, Falconyssus).
G.S. Spicer published between 1977 and 1987 several papers on the Rhinonyssidae of Guatemala and the USA.
W. Knee, H. Proctor, T. Galloway are publishing actively on the nasal mites of Canada.
I. Dimov published descriptions of several new species from Russia and a monograph (2018) concerning the Rhinonyssidae of birds in the NW of Russia.
