Established in 2003, the European Green Belt initiative connects 24 countries alongside national and regional initiatives. It is a backbone of a Pan-European ecological network and renders a significant contribution to European ‘Green Infrastructure’. It builds on the former Iron Curtain, which once separated human societies, but now has the potential to connect ecological communities by forming a viable ecological network.
